THE ACADEMY OF DREAMS (UNLIMITED) was formed to teach young people about acting and ‘theatre’ in a relaxed, light-hearted atmosphere. We believe children learn more readily if instructed by teachers with experience in performance - not merely with experience of teaching! We promote a professional attitude towards theatre, generating an appreciation and understanding of the genre. Each student is encouraged to develop his or her talents and build a positive self-image, creating self-confidence and pride in achievement. These qualities remain throughout life whether or not they take up acting as a career.

We lean towards the philosophy of Stanislavsky (the eminent Russian who founded the Moscow Arts Theatre) allowing students to discover their strengths, and shine in their own light. We disagree with ‘star-systems’, where particular actors appear to get more than their fair share of leading roles; we believe this is unproductive. A student may be a leading performer in one show - but take a back seat in another in favour of others! Our key phrase is ‘Co-operation - not Competition’ or, as Stanislavsky put it, "A Communion between Actors".

The school was founded on 15th September 1979 by the current Principal’s mother - Dorothy Clark. The present Principal, Peter A Clark BA (Hons), took over the school in 1980 when his mother was unable to continue. He has steered the students through many performances from straight plays, pantomimes and revues to street theatre and video films!

The first classes were at Springfield House Community Centre in Stevenage and cost the princely sum of 50p per week. The first production was an ‘Olde Tyme Music Hall’, with songs, dances, sketches and even a ventriloquist act! It was so well received a repeat performance was requested for senior citizens at a Day Centre. A second concert was given the next year, then a full-scale musical drama ‘Toad of Toad Hall’, with a cast of 30, and was staged at Stevenage’s Gordon Craig Theatre.

The 20th anniversary was in 1999; over 100 people attended a huge party - ex-students; teachers; current students & families; plus technicians who helped backstage. Our Silver Jubilee was celebrated in 2004 with a revue entitled “DUDE!” (Dreams Unlimited Drama Experience). This included dances, sketches and short plays, giving all students an opportunity to express their talents!

Many ex-students have taken up careers in the entertainment industry, both onstage and backstage, in theatre, film and television. All agree that the classes gave them the self-confidence and techniques needed for their careers.

We are delighted to welcome new students, and children of previous students who wish to join the school for their share of ‘Starlight and Stage Magic’!
